Codex Control setup and support

Install Codex Control from Elgato Marketplace. This is an independent integration, not an official OpenAI or Elgato product.

Requirements

Requires macOS 13 or later, Stream Deck 7.1 or later, and a running, signed-in Codex Desktop app with its bundled CLI. Available models, effort levels and Fast support depend on your account. Windows and dial controls are not supported. App updates may affect compatibility; available options can vary by plugin version.

Install and configure

  1. Install the plugin through its Marketplace listing. If you already have a plugin installer, double-click the .streamDeckPlugin file to install or update.
  2. In Stream Deck, drag Preset, Model, Effort, Fast Mode, Task or Status onto a key.
  3. Configure the model, effort, Fast behavior or target for the action. Preset applies model and effort together; Model and Effort change them independently. Fast can toggle, stay on or stay off. Task selects and opens a recent local task; Status displays or refreshes settings.
  4. For Current window, allow Stream Deck in macOS System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility, and bring the intended Codex task to the front. Alternatively, choose Selected on Deck or a fixed local task.
  5. Press the physical Stream Deck key to apply the action. Editing a button saves its configuration; it does not apply it to a task by itself.

Model, effort and Fast changes apply to the next turn, not a response already running. The plugin does not submit prompts. A task must be open and reachable. Physical controls across all inactive tasks have not been comprehensively verified.

The plugin identifier remains com.oddfin.codex-control. Keys from earlier publisher identifiers must be added again; the website's move to Oddfini does not change the plugin identifier.

Current window does not respond

Check Stream Deck's Accessibility permission. Bring the intended Codex task window to the front and press the key again. Keep Codex's Copy deeplink shortcut set to Command-Option-L. Remote tasks must already be reachable in Codex. The plugin stops if the captured task changes before settings are applied.

Current-window settings inputs can wait in order: QUEUED marks retained inputs. Up to eight can wait for ten seconds; task switches, clipboard capture, navigation or a full queue may stop an input.

The key says SELECT TASK

Open the button settings in Stream Deck. Under Select a task for the Deck, select a recent local task and click Select and open. The last manually selected task is restored after the plugin restarts.

A task does not open or settings do not apply

Keep Codex Desktop running. Select and open the intended task again from the button settings, and refresh the task list if needed. Read the error in the settings panel. If a model or effort is unavailable, refresh the list and choose one supported by your signed-in account; presets do not grant access.

Privacy and clipboard

Current window mode briefly uses the clipboard to copy the task link and restores supported prior contents when no intervening clipboard change is detected. Clipboard-history apps may retain the temporary link. Read the current published privacy policy.

Report a problem

Search GitHub Issues, then open a report. A GitHub account is required to post and reports are public. Include Stream Deck app and plugin versions, macOS version, button action, target mode (Current window, fixed or Selected on Deck), and the exact error.
